Hi Cissy! Two book recommendations for you - The Paper Menagerie & Other Stories by Ken Liu (I absolutely loved this collection of short stories - lots of magical realism / fantasy / sci-fi) + Sour Heart by Jenny Zhang (Asian-American girlhood!)
thanks, Cissy – LOVE the Asian American author recs! will add them to my list :)
currently reading Wild Swans: Three Daughters of China by Jung Chang about a grandmother, mother, and daughter whose lives unfolded over the 1900s in Manchuria. really good so far!
Hi Cissy- A great book to read on or before your trip is by Gail Tsukiyama called Women of the Silk. She's a great writer who lives in the East Bay. Have a wonderful upcoming trip and I hope to see you both upon your return. Amy
I love the idea of a flourishathon! I hope you keep doing these and would love to participate if I comes to NY.
I’ve been intending to do a tech sabbath for a long time but I keep failing. Taking this as a nudge to try again.
Books:
Fiction: Piranesi - good fantasy mind bender with beautiful visuals (a little slow to start but stick with it!)
Nonfiction: Dropping Ashes on the Buddha - one of my favorite books on Buddhism, all conversations between the teacher and students, about modern day questions
definitely hoping to run a Flourishathon in NY when I'm back in town. I'll keep you posted :)
and maybe even host a tech sabbath while I'm there – let me know how yours goes. I'm hosting a larger one once I'm back in the states and will likely share a playbook / learnings for others to run with their communities
appreciate the book recs! I've been studying Buddhism a lot more lately, planning to visit a few Buddhist templates while I'm in China
I love the idea of tech sabbath! I think I'll try it this week.
As for book recommendations for your long flight, I think you might enojy "Trying not to try" by Edward Slingerland, about wu wei (the anciet Chinese concept roughly meaning "effortless action"). I should note that my recommendation doesn't have anything to do with your heritage, it's just the book that came most vividly to mind, that I think you might enjoy (if you don't already know it!)
Wishing you a pleasant flight and many sparks of insight as you return to your roots.
Diana – such fun timing: my intention for this season of life has been accepting what is, being, and learning the art of surrender. I think I'd enjoy this book a lot – I'm glad I put the call out for recs, I hadn't heard of this book before!
thanks, Maddy! I've been spending more time reading about the life of women in China and learning about traditional Chinese medicine – sounds right up my alley :)
A Way Forward by Yung Pueblo . The Worlds I See by Dr. Fei Fei Li.
love Yung Pueblo's work :)

thanks, Amy – appreciate a book written by a local author on a topic I deeply resonate with :) look forward to seeing you when we're back!
Delightful reflections, thanks for sharing.

I'd be very curious to hear how you facilitate a tech sabbath!

curious to hear how your tech sabbath goes :)
Not sure if you’re looking for a book semi-related to your trip, but…I loved “Lady Tan’s Circle of Women”!
thanks, Maddy! I've been spending more time reading about the life of women in China and learning about traditional Chinese medicine – sounds right up my alley :)
